VOLUNTARY WORK OFFERED:- Medical Internships (Primary healthcare and Tropical medicine) Rural business development specialists Pre-med placements Agriculturalists Teachers (primary and secondary) in ESL and science in particular Lay volunteers to help with administration and ancillary clinical work Any persons willing to give schools presentations or to work as patient helpers in hospitals. Placements are ideally for a minimum of three months (with two weeks off mid-placement for independent travel in Kenya). However, we will consider well qualified volunteers for periods as short as four weeks. Most volunteer placements are for periods under six months, but some can be for up to two years. As the project works year-round, volunteers are accepted at any time subject to space being available. Placements are at the JABEZ base in Bungoma, with community groups or Nairobi Base. All volunteers work in the community. There is no language requirement other than a need to be able to communicate in English. Accommodation is in African-style houses,Hostels,Home stays in rural areas is often more basic or in a modern home stay placement with room, bathroom and Toilet. Bungoma is a substantial town with a reasonable range of stores and eating places. Kakamega, Busia, Webuye and Malaba also offer some scope for shopping. Otherwise, most Western volunteers will find some of their needs hard to fill in the smaller market centers. Food and accommodation is provided for a basic cost of $95-100 (or the equivalent Kshs 9,500-10,00) per week. However, Kenya wins no prizes for gastronomy and many volunteers occasionally find need for a “big city fix” in terms of a pizza or burger in one of the two main cities within two hours’ drive – Eldoret or Kisumu. Help is offered to obtain an appropriate visa and airport pick-up is free from  Nairobi is arranged, but costs about $190.00 round trip. Every volunteer is linked to an established expert and to a local family. JABEZ does charge its volunteers a one off fee of $850 to participate in its programmes.  The costs with which we invite volunteers to assist are any of the following: · Helping to buy fuel for project vehicles when serving the community · Purchase of pharmaceuticals available easily at the volunteer’s home · Provision of old, serviceable equipment not currently needed at the volunteer’s school, hospital or place of work e.t.c. We estimate that a volunteer needs about $150 per Week to live comfortably whilst working with us, including accommodation, food, project assistance, and spending money. This excludes travel costs beyond Western Kenya.

Program Highlights

  • Experience cultural exchange with local people and volunteers from around the globe!
  • Enjoy the outdoors on weekends while on a picnic or hiking trip.
  • Visit Kakamega rain forest and Lake Victoria as well as other natural attractions throughout Kenya.
  • Gain different home stay experiences, allowing you to learn various family cultures in Kenya.
  • Visit tourist attractions around the country, including Maasai Mara, Lake Nakuru, Mount Kenya, and Amboseli National Park.
  • And many more exciting excursion trips around the country…

Finally, remember Western Kenya is one of Sub-Saharan Africa’s poorest regions. Infrastructure is very poor. The average rural family earns under $3 per month. Consequently, be patient. Internet access is patchy, at best. We’ll get back to you just as soon as we can, but it likely will not be as quickly as you would like. Hope to hear from you.

Donations

As well as donations, Jabez Kenya relies heavily on volunteers in order that our many programmes can continue. We welcome people from all over the world, of all ages and genders, who can offer help through their experiences, skills and hard work. Although there are specific roles that need filling, we also encourage individuals who have alternative project ideas (as long as they fit in with Jabez’s aims and objectives) you connect or link us to through collaboration and partnership. We want you to get as much out of their experience as possible whilst at the same time, making a difference in the lives of some of the most poverty-stricken people in Kenya. We need volunteer classroom assistants to help out on a daily basis at the Jabez Academy Schools both Early Child Development(ECD),Primary and High Schools. As classes are large, it is not possible for the teachers to provide one to one support for every child and so classroom assistants are always welcome. Apart from Teaching, they will be able to offer Medical Service, Building and construction, environmental, social cultural diversity among other interesting exposure projects in the community.
